Portraits of The Savior
I was 20, studying with a friend. He held up an old classic image of Jesus and told me to just look at it. 60 seconds. Focus deeply.
About 30 seconds in, something landed. My breathing slowed and I was totally present. I felt strong.
There's a word for looking at someone that fully. It's to "behold" someone. The Bible uses it constantly and we've made it churchy, but it's just the practice of looking at one thing on purpose. You can do it with a picture of a child, a spouse, a parent who's gone. It will move you every time.
With His face the emotion is one of a kind. That's why I keep making these. Some days you don't need a scene. You need to behold Him and feel strong again.
Beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, [we] are changed into the same image.
— 2 Corinthians 3:18 (KJV)
