A storm on the Sea of Galilee does not arrive politely. Cold air drops off the hills, hits the warm water, and in minutes the whole lake is standing up. That night it caught a boat full of seasoned fishermen, and they were losing.

They woke Jesus with the question all of us have asked in some form: don't you care that we're going down?

He stood up in the wind and said three words. Peace, be still. Mark writes that the wind ceased and there was a great calm. (Mark 4:35-41)

The landscape edition of Calming the Storm gives that calm room to spread. Where the portrait stays close to Him, this canvas opens the water wide, out toward the horizon He was speaking to. I collaborated on this piece with my friend, a South African painter named Pieter Van Tonder. His brush, my direction.

Hang it wide: over a sofa, a bed, a mantel, the wall you see first when you walk in tired.

Calming the Storm | Landscape is available as a loose canvas, a gallery wrapped canvas, or a framed canvas. If a vertical composition fits your wall better, see the portrait edition.

There is still a voice the wind obeys.

Commonly asked questions (FAQ section)

What is the difference between loose canvas, gallery wrapped, and framed canvas? A loose canvas is the print alone, rolled and shipped ready for your own framer. A gallery wrapped canvas is stretched over a wooden frame with the image wrapping the edges, ready to hang out of the box. A framed canvas is the stretched canvas set inside a wood frame for a finished, gallery look.

Should I choose the landscape or the portrait version? Same moment, two compositions. Landscape opens the scene wide and suits broad walls: above a sofa, a bed, a mantel, or a credenza. Portrait holds the scene tall and suits entryways, stair landings, narrow walls, and pairings with other vertical pieces. See the portrait edition here. See Portrait version here

What scripture is this painting based on? Mark 4:35-41, where Jesus calms the storm on the Sea of Galilee with the words "Peace, be still." The same account appears in Matthew 8 and Luke 8.

Is this AI-generated art? No. Calming the Storm is a real painting by South African painter Pieter Van Tonder, created in collaboration with Mark Mabry as creative director. Every canvas is a fine art print of that original work.

What sizes are available? Sizes range from 12x8 to 60x40. All measurements are in inches.

How long until it ships? Most of the sizes ship within a week and deliver within about ten days. Sometimes the largest sizes can take two weeks.

Framed Canvas Art

Two ways to frame your canvas. Pick the one that fits the room.

Float Framed Canvas (generally more modern). A 1.5-inch-deep Premium Gallery Wrapped Canvas sits inside a slim frame with a small gap between frame and canvas, so the print appears to float. Available in nine thin frame profiles: Thin Gold, Thin White, Thin Silver, Thin Black, Thin Walnut, Thin Maple, Thin Oak, Thin Espresso, and Thin Natural. Ships ready to hang with hanging cleat, black backing, and bumpers.

Classic Framed Canvas (generally more traditional). A 0.75-inch-deep premium canvas sits inside the frame the way frames have held important pictures for centuries. Available in five hand-finished profiles: Plein Air Gold, Vintage Copper, Black Gold Classic, Concerto Black Gold, and Driftwood Gray. Ships ready to hang with hanging wire and black backing.

Both styles are framed to order in the USA with gallery-quality precision.
