About The Hem of His Robe

A note from Mark Mabry

While shooting this image, the woman who portrayed the Woman with the Issue of Blood taught me something I have not been able to shake. She is, herself, facing a rare life-threatening disease.

She told us about it. Her doctor had said, "one day you might wake up and not be able to see." So every night before bed she would stare at each of her kids' faces to memorize them.

We all know how the Bible story goes. She reaches for Jesus, He feels power leave Him, He turns. We shot a few times, and with each take, she reached more aggressively until finally she ripped the robe.

SHE RIPPED THE ROBE.

That part is not in the Bible. That part is hers.

"Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole" (Mark 5:34). That is the word Jesus used for her after He turned. She had not even asked. She had reached. He saw her, and He named her with the family word.

This piece anchors the Comfort Gifts collection. It is the image people send to a friend going through chemo, the same image on a wall in my house and on the wall in your hospital room. For another image of physical restoration, see Healing. For grief that has already happened, the Sympathy Gifts collection holds those moments.

That is fitting a miracle just for us.

Common questions

What scene does The Hem of His Robe depict?

The woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5, Luke 8, and Matthew 9. She reaches for the hem of Christ's robe to be healed. He turns and calls her "Daughter."

Is The Hem of His Robe a painting or a photograph?

A photograph. The aerial composition was shot from directly above to put the viewer in her line of sight. She is not seeing His face. She is seeing the hem. The hem is enough.

Why is Jesus's face not in the frame?

The faith in the image is in her hand, not in His expression. Showing His face would have pulled the eye to the recognition that comes a verse later. This piece holds the moment just before.

Where does The Hem of His Robe look best in a home?

In a quiet hallway, a bedside, or anywhere a person might pass by it during a hard season. Collectors describe it as the image they put up when someone they love is sick.

Who is The Hem of His Robe for?

For the family member sending a meaningful gift to someone going through cancer or chemo treatment. For the home where unspoken faith carries the day.

Framed Canvas Art

Two ways to frame your canvas. Pick the one that fits the room.

Float Framed Canvas (generally more modern). A 1.5-inch-deep Premium Gallery Wrapped Canvas sits inside a slim frame with a small gap between frame and canvas, so the print appears to float. Available in nine thin frame profiles: Thin Gold, Thin White, Thin Silver, Thin Black, Thin Walnut, Thin Maple, Thin Oak, Thin Espresso, and Thin Natural. Ships ready to hang with hanging cleat, black backing, and bumpers.

Classic Framed Canvas (generally more traditional). A 0.75-inch-deep premium canvas sits inside the frame the way frames have held important pictures for centuries. Available in five hand-finished profiles: Plein Air Gold, Vintage Copper, Black Gold Classic, Concerto Black Gold, and Driftwood Gray. Ships ready to hang with hanging wire and black backing.

Both styles are framed to order in the USA with gallery-quality precision.
