In 2007, I drove out to the Arizona desert with one idea. I wanted to photograph the people from the life of Jesus, with their faces, their goosebumps, their fear. I cast my friends and strangers as disciples. I shot blind men, lepers, the woman at the well, Mary Magdalene at the tomb. The late nights in the studio turned into the most sacred hours I have known.
Eighteen years later, the work spans staged photographs from the high desert and a handful of paintings collaborated on with South African painter Pieter Van Tonder. Different mediums, same conviction. Jesus, on canvas, in homes.
I have absolutely no idea what hole this work is filling in the souls of those that collect it. So I just better make something strong and potent.
